What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a registered healthcare discipline that aims to improve spinal and nervous system function.

In 2001, the World Federation of Chiropractic agreed on the following definition, which Aurum Health Care supports:

‘Chiropractic is a health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation.’

The musculoskeletal and nervous systems

Your musculoskeletal and nervous systems are built to work together so you can enjoy easy movement.

When you want to move a joint, your brain sends an electrical signal into your spinal cord, which passes the message on to the joint, allowing it to move in the direction you have chosen.

Joints can become restricted or injured through trauma, degenerative changes or tissue damage. This changes the tension needed for muscles, tendons, and ligaments for a particular movement and alters the overall joint position sense. When you have an altered joint position sense, the messages into your brain are also altered. Those faulty messages can increase your risk of injury and create balance issues leading to falls.

Chiropractic treatments

Chiropractic relieves pain and treats a range of spinal injuries and nervous system complaints.

Chiropractors are skilled in assessing joint dysfunction and its impact on chronic pain. Using best-evidence methods, we perform treatments involving a specific stretch of the ligaments and tendons in a precise direction to restore the movement in the joint. This is thought to stimulate the joint and increase blood supply and nutrients to the damaged area, enabling the creation of a new movement pattern and awareness. This process is thought to override the pain sensation, making you feel better.

The grade of stimulation or movement performed takes into account your bone density, stiffness and flexibility.

One of the key ways of preventing pain and maintaining any improvement is to develop a regular spinal check-up and correction routine to improve muscle tone and posture. Some treatments and exercises can exacerbate discomfort and it is important to have detailed guidance on the right strategy for you and the right method of movement.

Chiropractic treatments:

  • Adjustments (gentle movements)
  • Electrotherapy
  • Dry needling
  • Sports taping
  • Deep muscle release
  • Drop-piece technique
  • Instrument-assisted adjustments
  • Exercise prescription
  • Lifestyle modification

Treatments using our modern techniques are usually comfortable and are performed to your tolerance level.
